My story

Hearing about your sister’s experience with
accutane was a relief to me, because most people I talk to
or read about who have taken accutane speak of
unbearable dryness of lips and skin! I’m hoping I won’t have
to suffer those side effects, although that is just
the tip of the iceberg in relation to accutane’s side
effects! I drink a tremendous amount of water as it is
because I work at a food place, and I get free
food/drinks while I’m working, so I drink bottles of water
all day! I will have to get some of that Carmex! From
what I have heard, Cetaphil seems to be a good facial
cleanser for dry skin (which is what I am expecting after
I start accutane). Was accutane effective in
treating your sister’s acne? I have done a lot of reading
and I haven’t been able to find a percentage of how

Bryan,

You use Neosporin as a moisturizer?

mOm †

Nina,

I have tried most things you have
mentioned. I too have acne since being a teenager and it is
not a very happy day in the neighborhood to say the
least.

I have tried tetracyclin, nothing. I
stopped using that because of the threat to discolor my
teeth. I have used the topical benzoyl peroxide and that
did a little but not a lot. I recently used
Erythromycin and that helped tremendously. My sister uses
Accutane and she did not suffer any dryness at
all.

Her doc told her to hydrate her body. TO drink as
much water as possible 1 month before starting the
accutane. So she did. She changed her brand of lotion to
something that is rich and emollient. I believe she uses
curel. Not sure. Anyway, since we were little we have
used the lipgloss called Carmex…and that is what she

Christine,

It is really good that you are
doing research before taking the pill or before
deciding to get into any type of medication. You have
shown that you are very smart and that you know how to
do research.

I have taken ortho for 3 years
now. I have no side effects. Nothing abnormal to show
for it at all. Before Ortho I took Novum and so I
have been on the pill for many years. I have not
suffered any side effects at all. You should know that you
can suffer side effects from most everything. We
suffer side effects from eating fat. High cholesterol,
heart disease, and the list goes on and on.

THere have been clinical tests that show that ortho
does help maintain acne and in most cases clear it up.
I have clear skin thanks to ortho. Whereas

Karyn,

Ortho helps!! If you have cystic
acne like I do then you may experience mild breakouts
during the placebo pill. That is okay because as soon as
you begin taking them again for the next month you
will see things diminish. I believe you are really
going to like it. You know it has been clinically
proven to prevent acne. Now if your acne is mild to
moderate you should see some really good results. It may
take a month or two to see what is going to happen.
That is how long it took for me. Again, I have cystic
acne as well. So it really depends on the severity of
your acne.

You don’t have to wait until your
period begins to take the pill. You can basically start
on any Sunday that you want. After being on it for
so long I have tried many different things. I have

I have done extensive reading and research on
treatment of acne, and everything I’ve read doesn’t hold
Ortho-TriCycline very highly. Not only is it dangerous to take
birth control pills, they are not proven very effective
in fighting acne.

–Christine

My story

Wednesday, August 20th, 2003

I’ve had acne since I was about 13, it sucks!!
When I was 14 I went on differin (gel), it didn’t
work. Then I tried eurythramycin (pill) which didn’t
work either!! Then I went on tetracycline (pill) which
did give me a big improvement but still not clear
skin. After that I went about 4 months without any
medication and I broke out soo bad. So…now I have about
5-10 zits, mostly cytic ones and I am on minocycline.
I have been on it about 4 weeks and I have seen a
small improvement. I am going on ACCUTANE in about a
month, which will hopefully clear up my skin. I breakout
on my face, neck, and back. =( I’m worried about
starting accutane because of the side effects (most common
are dry skin, chapped lips, dry eyes, joint pains,
etc). So….thats basicly it for me!

–Nina

One more question for you, does this only help
the acne around the time of your period? Or is it all
of the acne during the whole month? I’m really
anxious to start it, like I said, it’s this or Accutane,
so we’ll see. I hope it works– this is probably the
only time I want my period to come so I can start the
pills!

Thanks for the advice,
Karyn

If your acne is mild to moderate it will work. I
think it works anyway because I have cystic acne and it
has helped. I am not on it right now… only because
I am trying a different form of
contraception.

Please let me know how it works for you.
There is
another benefit to you, very light monthlys!

Mom
