I tend to feel it's important to tone pores, as even Grandpa on the farm was
taught to tighten his pores after washing by splashing down with very cold
water. The thought is that to tighten the pores increases your skin's
protection from exterior dirts. After re-reading my earlier message, I need
to clarify that not all toners are stripping. It's stripping one should
avoid, such as pure alcohol. I like a combo that includes witch hazel, as
the alcohol in it is only 14% by volume. Consider your skin type in this
decision. Rosewater is generally great for dry skin, and Thayers have witch
hazel blends that may meet your needs ... including one with rosewater and
aloe, none of theirs have alcohol. I've found their products in my health
food stores.

It depends on what you use. Toning, I believe, means tightening the pores
after dirt, warm water, and cleanser has had them more open. Many say they
help rinse ... removing more dirt and remaining cleanser. These are a bit
stripping IMO, and the cleansing was not doing its job if water alone could
not rinse your skin to a clean condition. Harsher cleansing is not the
answer, but a most important avenue to correct first. As for toning, alcohol
is a very stripping and drying astringent. Witch hazel is a milder
astringent. Rosewater is a gentle, mild, non-drying astringent. Some people
go more acidic with a weak vinegar- or lemon-in-water type rinse, but be
advised that these can cause photosensitivity. Hope that helps. - Katie
