Can Olive Oil (cold press) be used topically on the skin?
But of course! The ancient Greeks used to bathe with oil, using a special
scraper to take off the excess. Barring allergies, most vegetable oils are
compatible with the skin. To moisturize dry skin, apply it daily directly to
dry spots and stretch marks. You're not going to be using that much so use the
best olive oil; extra virgin. Pure and Light olive oil has been chemically
processed, avoid it.
Make a face mask with olive oil and a good quality of clay mud or avocado.
Leave for 5-10 minutes, then rinse
Where else is olive oil used?
Lip balm, shampoo, bath oils, hand lotions, soap, soak for nails, massage oil,
dandruff treatment, etc. Soaking fingernails in warm olive oil will soften
cuticles and help brittle nails become more resilient.
How is olive oil used to make soap?
Fats or oils are saponified into soap by the addition of lye. Lye, also known
<!--more-->
as caustic soda is a common ingredient in household products such as paint
strippers, canned fruit cocktail, drain openers (Drano), etc. The lye is
neutralized by the process. Olive Oil and lye is mixed with colors, fragrances
and moisturizers such as glycerin. Usually a lower grade of olive oil is used,
such as pomace oil, for these purposes.
Can olive oil be thickened to use on psoriasis or dry skin?
You could make an emulsion of water and oil "like mayonnaise" which would
thicken and hydrate. Waxes such as beeswax can be added to make more of a
liniment or ointment, heat one pint of olive oil with 1 1/2 ounces of beeswax
until melted, cool, add more wax if necessary and repeat. Other ingredients used
to thicken emollients are agar, a seaweed extract, methyl cellulose or xanthum
gums, both plant extracts, and glycerin. They are all edible and used to thicken
everything from ice cream to pancake syrup.
A reader asks about Eczema: I have suffered from eczema badly on and off
since I was 13 years old. I went to a doctor last year and he prescribed a too
strong cortisone to use on my face and the skin has been damaged. Apparently it
stops the production of collagen and now I have fine wrinkles on the outer side
of my eyes and the forehead skin has thinned badly as well. I have recently
been trying many oils to try to rejuvenate my skin tissue again but alas seem to
have terrible reactions and bad flare ups after using them. but I've been trying
the cold pressed olive oil and putting it in my aqueous cream and I'm glad to
say that I'm not allergic to it! Would you be able to tell me if maybe I could
get some degree of collagen regeneration back to my skin?
Dr. Deane Replies: Olive Oil is a mild oil and of course has been used for
thousands of year on the skin. We sell organic extra virgin oil to many
"natural" and "organic" cosmetic manufacturers. Few people seem to be allergic
to olive oil.
As for the collagen, I do not know of any substances which can really
"rebuild" collagen. As you age the collagen fibers become thinner and less
plentiful. Sun exposure and strong steroids can speed up this process. There may
be hope in the future. Doctors used to think that cartilage couldn't be rebuilt
but glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are now showing promise for that
purpose. Perhaps we will find something to counteract the effects of gravity and
ageing in the skin.
Anthony asks: As a moisturizer is there a particular type of olive oil that
should be used? For example: virgin, extra virgin, extra light etc
Dr. Deane Replies: You're not going to be using that much so use the best
olive oil; extra virgin. Pure and Light olive oil may have been chemically
processed.
Joan writes: Check out our web page at www.headliceinfo.com. Don't laugh but
we teach people how to get rid of head lice using olive oil. Check out our book
and video, both called, "Head Lice to Dead Lice" at Amazon.com. There are links
at our web site.
Michelle asks: Over the past 5 years my scalp has been abused by chemicals
(perms), and my nerves has caused baldness. I have been washing my hair
regularly and treating my scalp with virgin olive oil. As a result hair is
growing in the bald area. Will the use of olive oil clog my pores? By the way I
am a 38 year old female who's parents and grandparents have a no history of
balding. My dermatologist told me that chemicals and nerves are the cause of my
baldness. To date I have stopped using perms and wash my hair regularly, deep
conditioning my scalp and use virgin olive oil as a moisturizer for the scalp
and hair.
Dr. Deane Responds: Olive oil has been used for thousands of years on human
skin and does not typically cause clogging of pores. I am glad that your hair is
returning and would like to credit the olive oil. I think it may be treating
the chemical induced scalp irritation caused by your perms. The most common
cause of balding is heredity, which causes the typical male pattern balding in
men and a more diffuse thinning of the hair in women. I have never seen any
science which suggests that olive oil would help hereditary balding. Hair dye
and perm chemicals can also cause balding and a flaking and irritation of the
scalp. This type of balding may be partially reversible with a mild emollient
like olive oil and discontinuation of the chemicals.
Z.P. from South Africa writes: In the Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, Most
Merciful 1400 years ago, the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (Peace be upon Him)
advised his followers to apply olive oil to their bodies, and himself use to be
seen with a lot of oil on his head. Since many of his advises are tallying with
medical science, I would like to know the effect of applying olive oil on the
head? For eg. Does it have a heating effect on the head or a cooling one?

OOS responds: The use of oil is found in many religions and cultures. It has
been used during special ceremonies and also as a general health measure. During
baptism in the Christian church, holy oil, which is often olive oil, may be used
for anointment. At the Chrism mass olive oil blessed by the bishop, "chrism", is
used in the ceremony. Like the grape, the Christian missionaries brought the
olive tree with them to California for food but also for ceremonial use. Olive
oil was used to anoint the early kings of the Greeks and Jews. The Greeks
anointed winning athletes and as you say, it is used in the Muslim religion.
Olive oil has also been used to anoint the dead in many cultures.

It has also been used for every day health measures. The Greeks used oil to
clean their bodies. In lieu of soap, at the baths, olive oil was applied to the
body then scraped off with special tools. In the time of Muhammad, putting oil
on the hair may have been considered a health measure as it discouraged lice and
seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff). I don't think it would have had either a
cooling or heating effect on the head. Olive oil on the body may help prevent
dry skin conditions and eczema and is a mild antibacterial agent just as natural
skin oils are. Selected References

My 2 cents: I hate Bare Essentials. I think it was made for people with
small pores and dry/normal skin. It looked cakey on my oily skin and made
the big pores on my nose look worse. Some stores, like Ulta, have testers for
you to try it on in the store. Bring a compact mirror so you can see it in
the daylight after you apply it. I did like the "Mineral Veil" a bit but
nothing else in their line.

Alison

Any suggestions on make-up to use for acne-prone and oily skin? I
feel like I've tried all of them, and they either clog my pores, look
orange, or make my face oilier.

I have posted a similar message like this before and no one bothered to reply.
But I will tell you that I have just ordered 4 bottles of it ( I am from
Australia, if you buy four you get 2 free so I worked it out to be cheaper in
the long term) any way I am going to try it and start taking it in about a week
form now so I will post you the results as weeks go by. I think it takes about 2
months to take effect. And I also had read that it is number one as well in acne
treatment.

Hi,
I'm hearing a lot about a new herbal acne treatment called "Acuzine".
My ex girl friend has tried it and she says it works pretty well. Has
anyone in this forum tried it? I researched on google and found a site
www.onlineacnesolution.com that is selling it in USA. I'm planning on
trying it out. Plz let me know if someone has tried it? Thanks.

And I also had read that it is number one as well in acne
treatment.

Hi,

i used provactiv and it did not work for me.. i still have acne mild, and large
pores, i just don't know what to used anymore..........

I have been using ProActiv for about a year. It Definely helps the acne problem
but it does not make it totally go away as they say it does on the commercials.
It has made my skin smother and toner. My pores have reduced by 50% and small
minor spots and acne have gone away but I only get a few really bad pimples once
and a while and just a few weird red marks where a pimple would be but is not
there. it does help your skin, but I would not guarantee that it will completely
going to get acne away. I also use a few other supermarket products like clean
and clear and Neutrogena. But if all you want is a visible reduce in acne and
better skin quality then you should maybe give it a try. It has a sixty day
money back guarantee. But I think it works different to all people for some it
may not work and for others it may make it completely go away, for me it is
middle.
<!--more-->

There are other options if you browse for skin care products on the internet.
have you tried taking Zinc and other vitamins. I take a multivitamin and a zinc
vitamin and I also take silver colloid or in America they call it colloidal
silver.

Hope this helps
bye

Hi everyone! My name is Christina. Every since my second child, I
have had a time with pimples. I use to get the ones they refer to as
cyst. I got fed up and went to the dermatologist. So far, I had
tried a topical cream, an astringent, and two oral meds. NOTHING is
working!

I use to use Clearisil. That dried my face out and ruined the hand
towels I had - LOL. Now I would like to know, what does everyone else
us or do to maintain a nice complexion? Anyone use Proactiv? Any
other home rememdies or over the counter ideas?

I would greatly appreciate any info you have! Thanks :) Christina

WOW! Thanks for the info. I am fed up too! My dermatologist keeps trying
different meds and nothing seems to work. Obviously I am wasting money with the
Dr. visits and the meds he keeps prescribing. Like I haven't wasted enough
money on over the counter products.

I didn't know anything about the Dimethicone. I do use Tide Free on my
laundry, and Bounce Free fabric softner.

I read some post, about using Head & Shoulders to clear up acne. Have u tried
this or anyone else? Did it help?

Christina

- Make sure you clean your towels, washcloths and bedding at least once a
week.
<!--more-->
- After you are done taking a shower use one towel specifically for your
hair and one for your body. Many of the ingredients in shampoos and
conditioners can clog pores. The chemical called Dimethicone (or anything
with a "cone" on the end of it) is used in many products nowadays but
unfortunately it can cause breakouts. Doctors may say otherwise but I was a
heavy Dimethicone user, which is the main ingredient in de-frizzing hair
products and suffered from acne from it. It basically coats your hair/skin
and keeps oils trapped in your hair follicles/skin. Unfortunately it is in
almost every hair/skin products nowadays.
- Use a fragrance and dye free Laundry Detergent and fabric softener. The
fragrances and dyes can cause or irritate acne. I suggest you do not use
liquid fabric softener and instead use dryer sheets. I use the brand ALL
Free and Clear detergent and dryer sheets as well as some more natural
brands. Liquid Fabric Softener basically coats your clothes with chemicals
in the final rinse and can be irritating. (Especially if you put it on your
towels and then on your face.)
- Drink LOTS of water. This seems to work for everyone.
- Always read ingredient labels. You'll notice a lot of acne products
contain the exact same thing so why waste your money, right?

Also, the skin on my face is very oily and I got so fed up with Acne
products I just bought some natural soap. It's called "Seaweed Soap" by
Reviva and I use that and a washcloth. The first few days I still had some
mild white heads but I no longer get those cyst like acne nodules under the
skin. Now my face looks better than it ever did.

They put so many chemicals in beauty products nowadays that anyone with skin
problems/sensitivity is bound to have problems. I have decided not to use
anything with Dimethicone. Even some products that claim to be "natural"
contain Dimethicone and other artificial ingredients.

I hope this info helped you!

Alison
